Edmond Halley (1656-1742)

Edmond Halley was an English astronomer, mathematician, physicist, and geophysicist who is best known for his work on cometary astronomy. He was the first person to predict the return of a comet, which later became known as Halley's Comet.

Halley was born in Haggerston, London, England, on November 8, 1656. He showed an early interest in mathematics and astronomy, and at the age of 17, he entered Queen's College, Oxford, to study these subjects.

After graduating from Oxford, Halley traveled to Paris, where he met some of the leading astronomers of the day, including Giovanni Cassini and Ole Rømer. He also conducted his own astronomical observations, and in 1682, he published his first paper on cometary astronomy.

In 1691, Halley was appointed Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford University. He held this position for the rest of his life, and during this time he made many important contributions to astronomy. He continued to study comets, and in 1705, he published his influential work, "Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets."

In this work, Halley proposed that comets were periodic objects that returned to the Sun on a regular basis. He also calculated the orbits of several comets, including Halley's Comet. Halley's Comet was first observed in 1682, and Halley predicted that it would return in 1758. The comet did indeed return in 1758, and it has been observed many times since then.

Halley also made important contributions to other areas of astronomy. He developed a method for determining the distance to the Moon, and he also studied the aurora borealis. He was also the first person to suggest that the stars might be moving through space.

Halley died in London on January 14, 1742. He is considered one of the greatest astronomers of all time, and his work has had a profound impact on our understanding of the universe.

Gonzalo Sanabria (1919-2018)

Gonzalo Sanabria was a Mexican astronomer who is best known for his work on the evolution of stars and galaxies. He was the first Mexican astronomer to be elected to the International Astronomical Union.

Sanabria was born in Mexico City on October 12, 1919. He showed an early interest in astronomy, and at the age of 17, he entered the National Autonomous University of Mexico to study this subject.

After graduating from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Sanabria traveled to the United States, where he studied at the University of Chicago and the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1951.

Sanabria returned to Mexico in 1951, and he joined the faculty of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He remained at the National Autonomous University of Mexico for the rest of his career, and during this time he made many important contributions to astronomy.

Sanabria was a pioneer in the field of stellar evolution, and he developed a number of important theories about the formation and evolution of stars. He also studied the evolution of galaxies, and he was one of the first astronomers to propose that galaxies could merge and interact with each other.

Sanabria was also a gifted teacher and mentor, and he inspired many young Mexican astronomers to pursue careers in this field. He was also a strong advocate for the development of astronomy in Mexico, and he played a key role in the establishment of the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics.
