Secret Gardens
Japan is home to many beautiful gardens, but some of the most stunning are hidden away from the crowds. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa is considered one of the three great gardens of Japan. It is known for its beautiful ponds, waterfalls, and teahouses.
- Korakuen Garden in Okayama is another one of the three great gardens of Japan. It is famous for its cherry blossoms in the spring and its autumn foliage.
- Ginkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto is also known as the Silver Pavilion. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its beautiful garden.
Hidden Shrines
Japan is also home to many hidden shrines. These shrines are often located in remote areas and are not well-known to tourists. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto is one of the most popular shrines in Japan. It is known for its thousands of red torii gates that lead up to the mountaintop.
- Kumano Nachi Taisha in Wakayama is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known for its beautiful waterfall and its ancient shrine buildings.
- Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known for its floating torii gate that appears to float on the water.
Charming Villages
Japan is also home to many charming villages. These villages are often located in the countryside and offer a glimpse of traditional Japanese life. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Shirakawa-go in Gifu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known for its traditional thatched-roof houses.
- Gokayama in Toyama is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known for its traditional Gassho-zukuri houses.
- Nagoro in Tokushima is a village that is known for its scarecrow population. The scarecrows were created by a local woman to replace the villagers who had moved away.
