John William McCormack: A Political Biography
John William McCormack was a Democratic politician who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1962 to 1971. McCormack was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1891. He attended Boston College and Suffolk University Law School. After graduating from law school, he served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1920 to 1926. In 1928, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served for 42 years.
McCormack was a close ally of President John F. Kennedy. He played a key role in the passage of Kennedy's legislative agenda, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. McCormack also served as Speaker of the House during the Vietnam War. He was a strong supporter of the war, but he also criticized the Nixon administration's handling of the conflict.
McCormack retired from Congress in 1971. He died in 1980. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
