About the Author
Walter Dean Myers was an award-winning author of over 100 books for children and young adults. He was a recipient of the National Book Award, the Newbery Medal, and the Coretta Scott King Award. Myers's books have been translated into more than 20 languages.
Myers was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, in 1937. He grew up in Harlem, New York City, and attended the High School of Music & Art. After graduating from high school, Myers served in the U.S. Army. He later attended New York University, where he earned a degree in journalism.
Myers began writing for children and young adults in the 1970s. His first novel, "Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Stuff," was published in 1975. Myers went on to write many other acclaimed novels, including "The Young Landlords," "Scorpions," and "Monster."
Myers died in 2014 at the age of 76. He left behind a legacy of powerful and inspiring books that continue to touch the lives of young people around the world.
