Kennan was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1904. He graduated from Princeton University in 1925 and then joined the US Foreign Service. He served in a variety of posts around the world, including Berlin, Moscow, and Washington, D.C.
In 1947, Kennan wrote the "Long Telegram," a top-secret memo that outlined his views on the Soviet Union. The Long Telegram was one of the most influential documents in American foreign policy history, and it helped to shape the US response to the Cold War.
