Excerpt from An Irishman's War in Iraq
“I remember the first time I saw a dead body. It was a young Iraqi soldier. He had been shot in the head. His face was frozen in a look of terror. I had never seen anything like it before. It was a terrible shock.
I also remember the first time I killed someone. It was a Taliban fighter. He was firing at us from a distance. I shot him with my rifle. He fell to the ground, dead.
Killing someone is a terrible thing. It is something that I will never forget. But I also know that it was necessary. I was protecting my fellow soldiers. I was fighting for my country.
The war in Iraq was a difficult time for me. I saw a lot of things that I will never be able to forget. But I also learned a lot about myself. I learned that I am stronger than I thought I was. I learned that I can overcome any challenge. And I learned that I am capable of great things.
I am proud of my service in Iraq. I am proud of the sacrifices that I made. And I am proud of the friends that I made along the way. The war in Iraq was a difficult time, but it was also a time of great growth for me. I am a better person for having served my country.
